Ahead of her free 4th Annual Birthday Bash at New Orleans’ concert venue Tipitina’s, The Soul Stoned interviewed the rapper Boyfriend. Her lyrics are speedy, sex-positive and her flow steered with a thoughtful nuance and creativity on social subjects. The refreshing voice in rap came to be out of her time living in The Big Easy, and Boyfriend’s rhymes have reached their way over for collaborations with artists like AF the Naysayer and Big Freedia, since the rap cabaret artist’s start in 2012.
Happy Birthday ! I hope you were able to spend it how you wanted. How’d it go?
That remains to be seen, as the only way I want to spend my birthday is in a sold out room at Tipitina’s!
Does your 4th annual birthday bash mean anything special for you or your persona?
It’s lovely to look back on my past events and reflect on the progression of it all. I started at Siberia and had a more, what do the kids call it – “punk” approach to the show then. I do miss those days, but it’s lovely to be able to present this more theatrical production.
What are you reactions to Love Your Boyfriend, Pt. 3?
My reactions are that of glee & pride!
How did your collaboration with AF THE NAYSAYER come about? He’s a welcomed local.
Oh we all see each other here I’d say… I knew he’d give me just what sound I was after and he didn’t disappoint.
What’s some of your writing processes or creative exercises like?
Bubble baths, martini’s, self-adoration.
How do you feel your cultural identity contributes as a voice in Hip Hop? Do you think your type of voice has been heard often?
I don’t consider myself contributing to Hip-Hop really… I’m a Rap Cabaret artist, and since I’m the only one I’d say my voice could be heard much more often indeed!
How has New Orleans been home for you?
My relationship with New Orleans has been more complex and various than any geographic association yet! At first I came here anonymous, knowing literally no one. Then it became a play land for me, at once debaucherous and yet very womb-like. This city can give you what you’re after, so long as you’re not after snowy mountaintops.
I hope you enjoy my new song “Marie Antoinette” featuring Big Freedia! Now on to Saturday, Let Them Eat Cake!
