Influenced by the blues legends Blind Willie McTell, Big Bill Broonzy, Leroy Carr, and Memphis Minnie, C.W. Stoneking made his second full lenght LP “Jungle Blues” a trip back to the 30′s , with gypsy blues at its finest. Stoneking’s describes his style as “Hokum Blues”, a musical mixture influenced by prewar blues, ragtime, vaudevillian novelty tunes, old hillbilly songs, jazz, and calypso.
This record will take you on a trip back to the pre-war era, the vintage feel that C.W. lay here is unbelievable. Backed by his Primitive Horn Orchestra ,James Clark (tuba, double bass), Stephen Grant (cornet), Stu Barker (trombone), and Johnny Machin (drums), C.W. made something original and unique. The prodution is atmospheric and full of details, you can almost feel the 78 rpm record rolling on the gramophone. Inspired in part by Stoneking’s amazing experience as a survivor of a shipwreck off Africa’s West Coast, “Jungle Blues” is a fantastic record.
